Next Week at FPC (May 6, 2022)

Dear FPC Family,

This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and we celebrate and give thanks for all those who have been mother figures in our lives. The next two Sundays after that are also special in their own ways. May 15 will be an outdoor celebration as we enjoy fellowship, light breakfast foods, and worship on the front lawn, with a Chamber Singers concert that night as well. More information is below. Then on May 22, we will have a congregational meeting and be invited to call our next Associate Pastor for Youth and Campus Ministry. Much excitement is ahead!

Blessings and Peace,
Craig Foster
Associate Pastor for Discipleship and Communications

Mother’s Day Offering
Mother’s Day has traditionally included a special offering in our church to support the ministry of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina, which serves older adults at 6 retirement communities across the state. The Mother’s Day Offering provides charitable care to residents who have outlived their life’s savings due to old age or costly medical bills, so that they can continue to call PCSC “home.” You can donate using the designated Mother’s Day Offering envelopes, by writing a check and adding “Mother’s Day Offering” in the memo, or you can give online at giving.prescommunities.org (and include “First Presbyterian, Spartanburg” in the memo). Thank you for keeping this special Presbyterian tradition alive!

Welcome Class –Sundays through May 22

Fellowship on Two Wheels
Wednesdays at 5:30pm & Fridays at 12:15pm during May
Leaving from the FLC Parking Lot
May is National Bike Month and a wonderful time of year to get that bike out of the garage, pump up the tires, and enjoy a ride with friends old and new. Each Wednesday evening and Friday at lunchtime in May (weather permitting), Pastor Craig will lead a short bike ride at a conversational pace down to the Rail Trail and the Park Hills neighborhood. (Duncan Park is currently unsafe for riding because of road construction.) All ages and levels of fitness are welcome. No one will be left behind! This will be a great opportunity to learn how to safely ride on the road, on multi-use trails, and in a group, all while enjoying exercise and good fellowship outdoors. Helmets are required. No registration is necessary, but we will leave promptly at the appointed time. Parents with young children can meet us at the Henry St. trail head of the Rail Trail, for a trail-only ride. On Fridays, the locker rooms will be available before and after the ride, if you wish to change and freshen up before heading on to whatever is next. Join us!

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Prepared to Thrive Book Drive
We know that by third grade, reading proficiency shifts from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” If children cannot read proficiently in third grade, they fall behind. In Spartanburg County, only 50% of third graders are testing at or above grade reading level. As part of United Way's Prepared to Thrive initiative, they are collecting book donations to support first-year teachers as they establish their classroom libraries. Books donated will be used by local students at Mary H. Wright Elementary and Cleveland Academy as they read in their classrooms this fall! Click here to learn more.

Mobile Meals Volunteers Needed
Mobile Meals has resumed daily deliveries and needs more volunteers! You can sign-up to participate in a regular route or offer to be a substitute driver when it suits your schedule. If you'd like more information, please contact Vivian Tanner at Mobile Meals (vivian@mobile-meals.org)

Support for Ukraine
So many have heavy hearts over the war and violence occurring in Ukraine. We as a denomination invite you to pray for peace and strength, as well as for a change of hearts and minds so that world leaders can reach some agreement. If you would like to support humanitarian relief to those fleeing violence in Ukraine, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has set-up a fund to support organizations working directly with families on the ground. Donations can be made through a fund at the church at fpcspartanburg.org/give.

Crafters Needed!
Do you knit, crochet, or cross stitch? Would you like to share your gifts and talents with your church family in a meaningful way? The Life Events Committee needs your help! Please contact Scottie Lummus (scottie.stan@gmail.com) or Meg Evatt (m_evatt@hotmail.com) for more details.
