Next Week at FPC (March 11, 2022)

Dear First Pres. Family,

This weekend our Confirmation Class will spend an extended time together as they learn about what is distinctive about our Presbyterian branch of Christianity and put into words what it is exactly that they believe at this important time in their lives. Please be in prayer for them as they draw near to the end of this Confirmation process.

Also, this Sunday is Girl Scout Sunday, and the 11am Sanctuary service will be full of area Girl Scouts as we celebrate the positive impacts of scouting on girls and women.

Blessings and Peace,
Craig Foster
Associate Pastor for Discipleship and Communications

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Witness Season UPDATE
Thank you to all who have given as part of our Witness Season Project to help purchase a van for Angels Charge Ministry, as they serve our area by helping women re-enter society after incarceration. This mission offers a number of services which require transportation: medical care, job skills training, and education. They are in desperate need of a van for these purposes. To date, we have exceeded our initial goal, raising $38,886 toward the purchase of a van! You can still contribute by giving online at fpcspartanburg.org/give or by marking checks as “Witness Season” in the memo line.

Support for Ukraine
So many have heavy hearts over the war and violence occurring in Ukraine. We as a denomination invite you to pray for peace and strength, as well as for a change of hearts and minds so that world leaders can reach some agreement. If you would like to support humanitarian relief to those fleeing violence in Ukraine, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has set-up a fund to support organizations working directly with families on the ground. Donations can be made through a fund at the church at fpcspartanburg.org/give or directly to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance here.

FPC Spartanburg Calls a New Senior Pastor

On January 30, we had a great turnout for our Annual Congregational Meeting and the congregation voted to call the Rev. Alan F. Dyer as our new Senior Pastor and Head of Staff. Alan is currently the senior pastor of St. Simons Presbyterian Church on St Simon’s Island, GA. His first Sunday in our pulpit will be Sunday, March 27, and there will be a welcome reception for him during the Sunday School hour between services. Until then, get to know a little about Alan and his family in this video and on the church website. If you missed the congregational meeting, you can watch a recording of the PNC report here.
Many thanks to the members of our PNC: David Beacham (chair), Bert Barre, Randall Chambers, Molly Colbath, Suzy Cole, Harriet Ike, Whit Kennedy, Craig Kocisko, Carter Smith.

Peace and Justice Task Force Spotlight: Week 2 March 13
The Peace and Justice Task Force March Spotlight is on The ECHO Project. The Echo Project is a nonprofit dedicated to healing racial division and standing against hatred through dialogue, empathy, and understanding. They work on expansive, community-informed projects that recognize our past to create space for a more just future, and they are starting the effort by transforming a former KKK headquarters namesake: the Echo Theater. Rev. David Kennedy, a Black pastor, is transforming the theater in Laurens County with a racist past into place where diversity is celebrated. Once a home for hate groups to assemble, the Echo Theater in Laurens, South Carolina is poised for a reinvention.
